The Round Table on resources for cancer patients

The Caritas Home Care Service held on 13.12.2012 a round-table meeting on resources for cancer patients.

According to official data, malignant tumors are the second highest cause of death in St. Petersburg after heart and circulatory diseases. Approximately 19% of all deaths are caused by cancer.

There are still many questions about this disease. What is it caused by? Is a cancer diagnosis always equal a death sentence? What to do with this diagnosis? Where to find help? Is the prescribed treatment right? There are also many other issues that confront both the sick people and their families as well as even people that are not affected by this disease.

The main objective of the Round Table was to meet cancer relief organization and to get to know their offers. The Round Table was attended by the following non-governmental organizations and government agencies: the Movement against Cancer, the Public Assistance Center for Families and Children of the city district "Primorsky", the Municipal Dispensary (outpatient clinic) for Cancer Patients, the Hospice No. 1, the Brotherhood for Cancer Patients at the parish of Our Lady icon "Dershavnaya", the NGOs "Spaseniye" ("Salvation") and "Vtoroye Dikhaniye" ("Second Breath") and the social welfare agency of the district "Kirovskiy". The meeting was also attended by people who were sick with cancer and overcame the disease.

Many urgent problems were discussed at that meeting: the governmental cancer services in St. Petersburg, psychological aid for people with cancer, social and legal resources for cancer patients and the lack of information about existing aid services.

"The most important outcome of the roundtable was that we got to know each other, exchanged contact details and agreed further cooperation. It is very important to concentrate efforts of many organizations, in order to support the affected people in their fight against the disease.", said Alina Kramushchenko, the coordinator of the project "Caritas Home Care Service."
